Why is June LGBTQ+ Pride Month?
[/vc_column_text][us_separator][vc_column_text]What are the current legal challenges for people in the community? In 1969, in Greenwich Village, New York City, USA, there was an uprising against oppressive police raids against LGBTQ+ people at the bar known as Stonewall. This uprising is considered a turning point in the community's struggle for equal rights and is considered the beginning of the modern LGBTQ+ movement. The "Pride" marches held in cities around the world commemorate that night at Stonewall, where respect for the rights of LGBTQ+ people was demanded. In addition, June is also the month in 2003 when the United States Supreme Court issued a historic decision in the case of Lawrence v. Texas, striking down laws criminalizing same-sex relationships. For this reason, among other historic events such as the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States, which also falls in June, this month is considered "Pride Month." A period that seeks to promote equal rights, tolerance, and visibility for LGBTQ+ people around the world. In Costa Rica, although there have been important advances in this area, such as the approval of same-sex marriage in 2020 thanks to a ruling by the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, legal challenges remain for members of the community. Among these are adoption rights for same-sex couples, with adoption being a more complicated process and mechanism than for heterosexual couples, demonstrating that there is no true equality in this area. Although Article 33 of our Constitution establishes that all people are equal before the law, there is no doubt that people with gender orientations or identities other than cis-heterosexual continue to face discrimination and violence in public places, on social media, in the workplace, and even within their families. Costa Rican legislation and society face many challenges in ensuring true equality and respect for the fundamental rights of LGBTQ+ people. However, by raising awareness and understanding that respect and tolerance are fundamental in human relationships, we are one step closer to true equality.
