Trademarks and Invention Patents as Economic Catalysts for Startups
A joint study by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) revealed a direct relationship between trademark and invention patent applications from startups and the growth volume of these companies, their businesses, and their ability to obtain funding. Specifically, the study came to the following conclusions:
-
Startups that have developed and registered their intellectual property rights from early stages have not only become competitive agents in the market but have also gained legal protection against potential counterfeiting or copying.
-
The European landscape reveals that such protection has allowed these startups to access funding opportunities 10.2 times better than companies that have not registered their inventions, thus obtaining the necessary means to develop their processes under better conditions.
-
Every startup has the potential to generate intellectual property rights, as every product or service involves the development of a brand, which becomes its first intangible asset that must be protected through registration.
-
In addition to the previous point, companies dedicated to scientific and technological development that generate invention patents or utility models have been able to secure the investment required to catalyze their economic growth and achieve more effective and stable product commercialization.
-
Trademarks, patents, and other formal intellectual property rights are catalysts for economic growth and innovation, and they represent the majority of a company’s value.
This study demonstrates the importance of intellectual property protection from early stages, highlighting its ability to grow businesses and turn them into development agents and investment attractors.
